Robots and computers are threatening the jobs of about half of us in the years to come.
It is happening in the organisation I work for right now.
Some entire departments are in the process of being disbanded as IT contractors take over to automate a lot of what they are doing today and services move from physical books to electronic ones.
A big IT project or my organisation aims at automating core processes end-to-end. In the run-up, already several hundred staff have left or changed jobs. We have not been hiring any administrative staff for years now, reinforcing scientist and engineering staff instead.
Bank braches in my country are disappearing fast as we all use internet banking more and more. Cash machines also disappear. Recent strikes of drivers of a security company that fills them up tried in vain to prevent their loss of jobs.
In many supermarkets I scan my products myself and then pay at the exit electronically, making cashiers redundant.
I haven’t been in a travel agency for 15 years, booking all my flights and hotels online.
