Then, the PM triggered article 50 in March 2017 and negotiations began. Later, a new parliamentary election was held resulting in the Tories losing their majority in the parliament. Still, I started to say that I was probably wrong to say that Brexit was not going to happen.
The Tories had to team up with an unsavoury Northern Irish party to maintain a feeble majority. Labour with Corbyn somehow continued to endorse Brexit. By now, the cabinet and parliament are in complete disarray, negotiations are going nowhere. The UK is in complete chaos.
Remainers are starting to organize marches and social media campaigns. Opinion polls seem to be shifting towards a remain.
Hard or soft, even government reports say that Brexit is a negative. The Good Friday agreement is in danger if borders between the two parts of Ireland need to be rebuilt. Customs Union without free movement is rightly rejected by the EU that continuously has the upper hand in the talks. Dismal reports about NHS and businesses lacking EU workers, banks and others starting to leave, all paint a grim picture and humiliate the UK as a whole.
Can some face-saving scenario be found where Britain essentially stays?
I do hope so.
Meanwhile, British society becomes more and more divided and angry. I fear violence erupting, not only against foreigners (on the rise) but among the true British.
Brits working with me in Europe are requesting EU passports for themselves and their kids. So sad.
I start to see a shift towards a non-Brexit outcome again.
Will the UK stay with us?
