The liberal media continue to spell disaster for the UK in the event of Brexit and I gladly believe them. Possibly, pride and a true deep-rooted adversity to Europe among many in the UK have kept the dynamics going. My filter bubble kept me in hope that the UK would change course. I also could not believe my eyes when I saw that Trump had won the US elections. I was ‘speechless’ for a moment.
Then Austria elected a pro-EU president, The Dutch did not vote to make Wilders’ PVV party the biggest, Marine LePen is going down in the polls in France. Merkel did well in a local election in Germany, stemming the German AfD party’s advance. Bulgaria voted pro-EU.
Apart from Poland and Hungary, things are looking up a bit for Europeans. Some call it the Trump effect: A populist unable to get anything done, scaring Europeans and waking them up.
From the height of my personal ivory tower, I have become a member of a political party in a country where I have no vote. I started to subscribe to two liberal newspapers to help defend the voice of reason.
With my family living across four EU countries, my outlook has always been broad. I embrace Europe as the beacon of light and my true home.
And now, #pulseofeurope emerges as a grass root movement that gathers people on central city squares every Sunday to support Europe and celebrate 70 years of peace.
After Pegida, FN, UKIP, AfD, PVV this is a sign for the good.
We will see.
Would you go and show support for the EU on a #pulseofeurope event on Sundays (weather permitting) ?
